The Principals

The principals of L. R. Nathan Associates have decades of practical and professional experience working with business owners and executives across a diverse array of industries. Their relationships among the financial, accounting and legal communities have been built over more than thirty years. Their skills and judgment are borne of first hand experience working through a great variety of business operations and financing issues.

Larry R. Nathan

Larry R. Nathan has been financing companies since 1970. He is well-known among institutional financing sources throughout the United States, including commercial banks, asset based lenders, tranche b funds, mezzanine funds and private equity investors.

Prior to forming L. R. Nathan Associates in 1980, Larry was a Divisional Vice President of Aetna Business Credit (now Bank of America Business Capital), where he was involved for seven years in the development of the highly successful Intermediate Term Lending division. He was an Investment Officer with the Private Placement Financing division of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company during the previous three years, where he was responsible for structuring, underwriting and managing a portfolio of long-term loans, most of which included equity features. Additionally, Mr. Nathan held the position of Staff Economist with the American Public Power Association and the Committee for Economic Development in Washington, D. C. and was a consultant with National Economic Research Associates in Philadelphia, Pa.

Larry Nathan holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School and an MA in Economic Theory from George Washington University. He earned his BA from the University of Connecticut.


Philip E. McTague

Philip McTague has a strong reputation in the fields of turnaround and financial management. His advice and work product on behalf of troubled companies are trusted throughout the banking community. Phil has been Managing Director in charge of the firm’s turnaround services since 1989.

Phil’s background in public accounting includes 13 years with Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst & Young LLP) as a CPA and Audit Principal. He left public accounting to become chief financial officer of two public and two privately-owned companies in manufacturing, service and retail businesses. As Managing Director of L. R. Nathan Associates, Mr. McTague has served in the capacities of interim CFO and chief restructuring officer in numerous diverse client situations over the past twenty years. This practical experience, coupled with a sound professional background, have equipped him to provide quick, sound evaluations in a variety of business situations involving financial stress, as well as to implement operational improvements, liquidity and cost savings.

Phil McTague received a BSBA in Accounting from Northeastern University and earned his MBA from Boston University School of Management. He is a member of the Turnaround Management Association.
